What is Yoga?

Yoga is a rich tradition spanning thousands of years, with teachings that extend far beyond the physical into every aspect of our lives. The word 'yoga' derives from the Sanskrit word 'Yuj' meaning 'to yoke' or 'unite' and it is this concept of union - of body and mind, of mind and soul, of the individual and the universal - that is central to the philosophy of yoga.

On a physical level, yoga enhances overall well-being; it tones the muscles, detoxifies the organs and increases flexibility, strength and vitality in the body. For the mind it improves memory and attention, sharpens the intellect, and balances the emotions.

However, the physical aspects of yoga represent only a thread in a rich philosophical tapestry that has spanned thousands of years. The higher teachings of yoga take one beyond techniques, and guide the yogi through a process that will ultimately lead to self-awareness and liberation.
